Fall Writing Courses
Introduction to Story Writing
In this introductory story writing course, students focus on crafting a well‑structured story with a strong beginning, clear conflict, meaningful resolution, and satisfying ending. They are also introduced to developing engaging characters and vivid settings.
The course begins with brainstorming and outlining to help students organize their ideas before writing. Using their outlines, students write a cohesive story that flows logically and resolves the central conflict. Along the way, they practice using descriptive language and correct punctuation for dialogue.
Time: Wednesdays 3:30 – 5:00 pm
Location: In Central Nanaimo near the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre (Hawthorne Heights)
Dates: September 23 – December 16
Length: 12 Classes (No class on October 14)

Crafting Strong Stories
In this story writing course, students learn the key elements of narrative: strong characters, vivid settings, clear conflict, and satisfying resolutions. They will practice planning their stories with simple outlines so events flow logically and build tension.
Lessons focus on “show, don’t tell,” using descriptive language, sensory details, and varied sentences to bring scenes to life. Students will also learn how to use dialogue to reveal character traits and move the plot forward. Through brainstorming, drafting, revising, and sharing, each student creates a polished, engaging short story they are proud of.
Time: Wednesdays 5:15 – 6:45 pm

Crafting Strong Paragraphs
In this writing course, students learn to write clear, well‑organized paragraphs that stay focused on one main idea. They practice crafting strong topic sentences, adding relevant supporting details, and writing effective closing sentences that tie their ideas together. Lessons emphasize sentence variety, transition words, and strong word choice to make their writing more interesting and easier to follow.
Students also explore different types of paragraphs, including narrative, descriptive, opinion, and informational. By the end of the course, they are able to produce confident, polished paragraphs across a range of topics.
Time: Thursday 3:30 – 5:00 pm

The Writing Toolkit
In this writing course, students learn how to write clear, focused paragraphs about a single main idea. They practice crafting strong topic sentences, adding supporting details, and ending with a closing sentence that makes their writing feel complete. Lessons review sentence basics, including capital letters, punctuation, and how to avoid run‑on sentences.
Students use transition words, descriptive details, and simple graphic organizers to plan and organize their ideas. They write different types of paragraphs, including descriptive, opinion, and simple narrative, and learn to revise and edit their work. By the end of the course, students can write neat, well‑structured paragraphs that they feel confident sharing.

Course Information and Details
The purpose of the writing courses is to build practical academic skills and confidence for children aged 7-13.
What is the duration of each course?
Each course runs for 12 weeks with one class per week.
Will there be homework?
Yes, homework is an integral part of our courses, reinforcing the lessons taught in class.
How is homework assessed?
Homework is marked using a rubric that is aligned with the BC grade level standards. (You can request for the homework to be marked without the rubric.)
What is the class size?
There will be four to six students per class.
How do I know which course is the right fit for my child?
The grade levels listed for each course are meant to be flexible. For instance, a grade 7 student who is writing below grade level may benefit from taking the Crafting Strong Paragraphs course.
Where will the lessons take place?
They will be in Central Nanaimo.
Are the classes in-person or online?
The classes are in-person and take place in Central Nanaimo.
